Commitment is not about making promises but being sure that no matter what happens you will be accountable or available.
When people ask for a token of commitment or security before they invest in something particularly with friends, it is not because they are selfish rather they are wise to separate business from pleasure.
Relationships get messed up when there are no clear boundaries. When you have undefined expectations, you will be setting yourself up for disappointments because humans can and will fall short even when they don’t mean to.
Therefore, whether you be the dependent or the benefactor, honor your relationships by making sure that whatever can cause trouble down the line is sorted out ahead. The ability to hold this discussion with friends (and moreso extended family) shows maturity and a genuine relationship where you can be sure to handle matters justly when and if things don’t go well in good faith.
