Beyond oppression…. πππ(Matt23:11)
A lot of us find ourselves in cultures and settings where positions of authority are assumed to be synonymous with control. However, what both leaders and even those in their care don’t know or practice is that being in leadership is to be in service.
Leadership is not for oppression but for compassion. A lot of people are wounded by authority figures who do not understand the relevance of their positions.
Leaders or authority figures are representatives of God’s order in institutions, be it in government or families and other social structures. Being a husband, parent, teacher, manager, etc. puts you in a position where you can easily damage the sense of safety of individuals without caution and care.
You may not trust authority figures because of experiences of abuse of power and privilege. Unfortunately, this distrust cascades to other authority figures, increasing your fear and vulnerability and further enstrange you from knowing the covering provided by such offices.
God never allows nor authorizes abuse. People make their choices by omission or commission and will be held accountable for their choices. If you’ve suffered from an abuse of power, know that even though it’s difficult to trust another, restoration is available for you. You don’t need to live in the burden of fear and distrust all your life. God will make all things new, and you can find peace for your soul.
